How to Draft a Resolution (SMART Goal)
Hello delegates!
I hope you are doing well! BMUN is just around the corner, so I wanted to review the pinnacle document of the committee: your resolutions.
Before we get into the details of your resolutions, the format & jargon about resolutions can be quite confusing and daunting, but please do not worry or stress! BMUN has a Resolution Structure document, linked here: https://www.bmun.org/resolutions/structure This document covers all the necessary details of the resolution.
When turning your solutions into operative format, we want you to keep the SMART goals in mind:
S - Specific, what exactly is this operative trying to achieve? Additionally, what specifically will be accomplished? What actions will you news organization take?
M - Measurable, how will you know when this operative is successful? Are there any specific points that will make this solution more quantifiable?
A - Attainable, is this solution genuinely possible? Is that clear in your operative? Please be realistic and remain within the scope of the committee.
R - Relevant, will this operative positively contribute to solving this problem (i.e. Sensationalism & profit prioritization in the news media)?
T - Timely, when do you expect to achieve this solution? Are these time-constraints reasonable? This will ensure that your resolution stays on track to be achieved in a timely manner.
When debating & brainstorming resolutions, please keep in mind that we want delegates to try and establish a framework that can help hold news corporations more accountable for their reporting. Overall, when in doubt, please refer back to the SMART goals and the Topic Synopsis! This structure will really help transform your solutions into action-oriented operatives.
Again, the resolution process is such an important element of our conference, and we are here to answer any questions you may have along the way! Feel free to comment below or email us with any questions. Overall, we wish you all the best of luck with your research and preparation! Please reach out if you need anything :)
Best,
Sonia Saltzman
